If your garage door isn’t working properly, it could be time for a garage door roller replacement. If they’re damaged or worn out, it can cause a range of big problems.
Prioritizing regular garage door maintenance can help property owners avoid a surprise garage door roller replacement service call, but our Cleveland garage door repair techs are happy to help customers no matter what shape their door is in.
What are Garage Door Rollers?
Garage door rollers are the parts attached to the door’s sides that roll within the tracks. Their purpose is to allow for smooth and efficient opening and closing.
There are several different types of rollers, but the most common are steel and nylon.
Nylon rollers are typically used for residential garage doors. Nylon garage door roller replacement can be anticipated roughly every 5-7 years.
Steel rollers are common on commercial garage doors. These are more durable the nylon rollers, and have a lifespan of about 7-10 years.
With both of types of rollers, some factors that can impact the replacement schedule:
- Exposure to temperature extremes/swings.
- Frequency of daily use.
- Regular maintenance.
- The quality of the roller/material itself.
Risks if the Rollers Malfunction
When your garage door roller becomes damaged or worn, you run the risk of practical, financial, and safety issues.
Problems can include:
- The door gets stuck. A stuck garage door – either in the open or shut position – is a possible safety hazard. If it’s open, the contents of the garage may be vulnerable to theft or weather damage. (And if it’s stuck in an open position, there’s always the chance it could suddenly drop.)
- Potential for falls or injuries. If the roller breaks or loosens while the door is in motion, the door might suddenly fall. Keep in mind: The average garage door is anywhere from 100-300 lbs, depending on the material. This is obviously a danger to anyone who may be underneath.
- Safety function reversals. Many newer garage doors have built-in safety features, such as mechanisms that halt the door’s downward path if there’s an obstruction. A malfunctioning roller can interfere with this – potentially causing the door not to stop, even if there is something/someone underneath. This can be especially dangerous if the person underneath is expecting that it will stop, and doesn’t scramble away fast enough.
- Additional wear on other components. A garage door only functions properly when all its parts are in good working order. But when one part is failing, it can cause greater stress/wear on the other components. That could result in the need to replace the entire system long before it would otherwise be time.
How Do I Know if It’s Time for a Garage Door Roller Replacement?
If you notice any of the following, it’s probably time to call a repair tech about a garage door roller replacement:
- Uneven opening or frequent misalignment. This is usually the first and most obvious sign of a roller issue. The rollers are what help ensure proper alignment when the garage door opens and closes. That alignment is key to proper function. If the door is frequently slipping out of alignment or running off its hinges, more than likely it’s a roller issue.
- Shaky operation. You’ll notice the garage door starts to vibrate/shake excessively with each up-down rotation. It may even seem like it’s going to jump off the track.
- Unusually noisy. Most garage doors are going to make some amount of noise; few are completely silent. But if it starts to sound like a bulldozer every time you open or close it – something is definitely wrong, and it could be the rollers.
Do I Need to Hire a Pro for Cleveland Garage Door Roller Replacement?
There’s no law or ordinance that says you have to hire a professional to repair or replace your garage door rollers. But unless you possess precisely the right tools & replacement parts AND know exactly what you’re doing, you’re taking a risk.
The good news is that replacing garage door rollers is not a high-end expense as far as garage door repairs go (though exact pricing will depend on the complexity of the project and the quality of the parts).
If you’re still inclined to take on garage door roller replacement as a DIY project, at least carefully consider the following first:
- Safety. This is the biggest concern. Garage doors are heavy, and can cause serious injuries if they aren’t handled properly. Roller replacement may require working on the door in various positions. The professionals know how to do this safely to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Expertise. When you hire a garage door repair professional, you get the benefit of confirming the problem (so you aren’t doing needless work). A technician can also identify existing/anticipated issues with other components. Staying ahead of garage door maintenance minimizes the chances that an unchecked small issue will become a bigger problem – which lowers your long-term costs.
- Correct tools and parts. If you don’t have the exact right tools or replacement parts, you’re risking subpar results – which can lead to additional problems down the road.
- Warranty considerations. Lots of garage door manufacturers extend customer warranties on their products. However, the terms and conditions of those warranties typically require professional maintenance and repairs. Even if you don’t need to lean on the warranty for this particular issue, it could negatively impact your ability to use it for a bigger future problem.
